Until recently there wasn't an easy way to communicate with it from a standalone program. I have written a set of modules in FORTRAN which allow a programmer to send two-dimensional images to it and control the color look-up table. One can also send various kinds of cursors and read back the cursor coordinates. More than one image can be loaded at one time with the cursor coordinates being correct for each image. If several images are sent in succession, slow video can be simulated. The software has also been interfaced with the MIIPS plot package, allowing plotting in color. The complete source code, execute image, and several demonstration programs are available via anonymous ftp from vms.ucc.okstate.edu. Interested programmers should read the file SAO_INSTRUCTIONS.TXT in directory DUA4:[MIIPS.DISPLAY] and follow the directions therein. Questions can be addressed to me at U6233AA@vms.ucc.okstate.edu. Further details appear in the February issue of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Donald Gudehus
