VMS users will need to get a version of tar that works under VMS to unpack these files (as well as `gzip'). We don't have the sources presently, but a precompiled VMS tar binary is on ftp.vms.stacken.kth.se in the directory /VMS. Ports of various GNU software to VMS are avaiable via anonymous ftp from ftp.vms.stacken.kth.se in the directories /GNU-VMS and /GNU-VMS/contrib. The gzip sources are available here in this directory. You will have to transfer in binary mode, and you may have to use something like the FILE utility to properly set the file attributes. That program isn't standard in VMS, but is available from any recent DECUS SIG tape, and from various ftp sites such as mvb.saic.com, wuarchive.wustl.edu, ftp.wku.edu, and ftp.spc.edu. There may also be a version of VMS Posix `tar' there. If you have any comments or updates to suggest for this file, please let me know. I know nothing about VMS (and the GNU Project itself doesn't expend any effort on ports of GNU software to VMS), so I rely on feedback from people on the net to keep it up to date. Thanks. --Noah
