The other possibility is incompatible hardware. Have you tried a SCSI CD-ROM drive? I seriouslu doubt that any DVD drives were qualified in an XP1000. (I have a Sun-gray TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1711 SCSI drive in my main system. I have a SONY DVD RW AW-Q170A ATAPI DVD-everything in my Tru64/experimental system.
