Not an ARC file; the ARC utility leaves the filename in human readable format (in my test case starting at byte 2 of the first record). ARC does produce 512-byte fixed length record output. Not likely a ZOO archive, both ZOO 2.0 and 2.1 say ZOO 2.x Archive right at the beginning of the archive file, which are STREAM_LF with carriage return carriage control. I don't have LZCOMP online so can't test a new one, sorry. Those all started with a set of 16 common bytes in my old backup lists. Are these files by chance marked /NOBACKUP? If so I wonder if at some point they were 'restored' from tape. I think that if the disk being restored to was set to /nohighwater they would just get space allocated on the disk with whatever used to be on those newly allocated blocks left in place. If thats the case then there's nothing usable in the files. Any chance they came through an EBCDIC system, or got ROT-13'd or something simple like that? They are on the Freeware 4.0 distribution; the executable appears to be VAX-only, and there are no *.h files to go with the C files, so building under Alpha may not be a viable option. You're thinking of RADIX50, a base-40 encoding used to save space in symbol tables (originally) and filenames in directories (in certain 16-bit computing systems). It's an extremely restricted character set, made up of the numerics, upper case alphabetics, period, underscore, percent sign, and space. The exact encoding differs between the PDP-11 and the PDP-10 (and presumably between them and the 36-bit IBM gear where it was invented). -- Rich Alderson "You get what anybody gets. My newly burnt 8.3 CD copy works fine, and I was able to boot. I've installed 8.3, configured DECnet, typed in the DW-MOTIF license and have DECwindows up, so that's all good. He had me try a few things with TestDisk to get the partition back (on the old disk, while booted from a new disk with Windows installed.) Apparently, I had messed it up too much, so I used his PhotoRec software and recovered lots of files, including .jpg, .bmp, .tif, .doc, .xls, .ppt, .pps, and .pub. There were others, but that was a few years ago. As I recall, all the Micro$haft documents were recovered as .doc files, but when opening them with Wordpad, it was pretty easy to tell how to rename them. Many of the recovered Micro$haft documents were larger than the originals, but opening them and saving them restored the original size. The only expense I had was a new hard drive and since I was about in need of some more space, it was worth it. I can't say there was anything it didn't recover that I needed.
