It is a longstanding known bug of VMS that AUTOGEN doesn't calculate the SYSGEN parameters correctly for DECwindows after an initial installation. I thought it was/is finally fixed in VMS V8. I've a MIN_GBLSECTIONS=1024 in all my MODPARAMS.DAT "to help AUTOGEN" for many years/VMS-versions (but as I only do upgrades and not fresh VMS installations I haven't noticed the problem myself for a loong time). $ @SYS$STARTUP:VMS$DECW_CHECK_PARAMS $ SHOW SYMBOL $STATUS ! I usually put MIN_GBLSECTIONS=1024 into MODPARAMS.DAT. Being conservative with either GBLSECTIONS or GBLPAGES really harks back to the time when memory was expensive and a VAX might only have 8 MB or less of RAM. Even in those days, I was always generous with the allocation of both these parameters, as increasing them involved a reboot. A veritable cheer went up in our office when I announced that GBLPAGES had became a Dynamic parameter (V7.1 or thereabouts) :-) -- Paul Sture ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2007 01:01:38 -0500 (CDT) From: sms@antinode.org (Steven M. Great! So I just need to remember what the name of the directory was. Those are not files that I need; I just forgot to INSTALL REMOVE before deleting the directory. I remember the name of one of the 2 directories I'm having problems with. I was able to successfully remove the entries from it. The other one is a bit deeper (many levels) so I will just do a backup/list of a tape that has it to find the correct path to the installed files. Why I cannot INSTALL PURGE, I was asked ? Because "protected images must be installed" (can`t remember the exact message I would get, would I try this). If I could stop my applications and uninstall them, I could do a shutdown as well. But I can`t. Thanks very much for your help, everyone ! Problem solved without a reboot (of course, this is not M$) ! I think it's a known caveat: when doing any such things - UNDELETE, DELETE/TREE, etc. - the recommendation is to first quiesce the system. Best advice: DISMOUNT the volume from the system and MOUNT it privately so you can be 100% certain that DFU has entirely exclusive access. Note also that DFU V2.7 or so DELETE/TREE cannot handle huge file counts in a tree without issues. -- David J Dachtera dba DJE Systems http://www.djesys.com/ Unofficial OpenVMS Marketing Home Page http://www.djesys.com/vms/market/ Unofficial Affordable OpenVMS Home Page: http://www.djesys.com/vms/soho/ Unofficial OpenVMS-IA32 Home Page: http://www.djesys.com/vms/ia32/ Unofficial OpenVMS Hobbyist Support Page: http://www.djesys.com/vms/support/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:56:24 +0000 (UTC) From: mustang@NOSPAM.ucc.asn.au Subject: Farewell Paul Repacholi Message-ID: Hello, It is my sad duty to inform you all that our friend Paul Repacholi has passed away.
