But on a workstation, decw$startup runs as part of sysman, so as systartup_vms.com runs, a SET DISP/CREATE would fail because decw$startup hasn't run yet. There doesn't appear to be a DECW$SYSTARTUP.COM mechanism that allows one to add site specific commands. ( and am not sure if one can add commands to the *private* commands since , at least in the case of the server one, it seems to still be fairly in the decw$startup procees. Is there some .COM that will be invoked by DECW$STARTUP once enough of decwidnows is started to make SET DISPLAY/CREATE work ? Or is the only recommended way to write a small procedure and add it to the syaman startup database ? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Mar 2008 00:19:19 -0400 From: JF Mezei Subject: Does POWER_OFF really work ? While doing the shutdown procedure, SHUTDOWN.COM prompts me for shutdown options and one of them was POWER_OFF . So I selected this. But after the shutdown, the power stayed on. (Alpha DS10L , this has the RMC and from RMC one can power off the unit). Is this normal ? Or perhaps the original poster had meant porting something from Unix on 8086 or other platform to VMS on Alpha. the answer to the above question would be: http://www.hp.com/go/vms/doc and then look for the VMS (they use the term OpenVMS at HP because they dropped the trademark for "VMS") System Services manual. There is also the run time library, you will want a look at the LIB$ routines. There is also a VMS programming concepts manual (does it still exist) which explains many of the constructs used by VMS (time formats, the string descriptors, item lists etc etc) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Mar 2008 00:22:16 +0000 From: "Maciej W. Well, I think "System Programming / OS Development / OS Porting" makes it= =20 pretty much clear it is not application programming that is in question=20 here. I have yet to see an operating system that does not require any=20 platform-specific code, including handwritten assembly. And then even=20 higher-level language OS code may require knowledge of processor-specific= =20 details, like architecture of the register file or the TLB. Resources=20 mentioned elsewhere in this thread should be good enough though. A Macintosh is the X-display. The MAC has a different keyboard/mouse environment. For instance, on VMS, with the really neat patch that was provided some time ago, the mouse thumbwheel acts as up/down arrow keys. On the MAC, the thumbwheel acts as its own button (and it has both up/down and left/right). And obviously, there is the issue of the backspace (works fine in decterm, but not in TPU). Here is the context: I use the Mac as the X-server/display/terminal. I have a DECW$DISPLAY logical on the VMS host that points to the Mac. I start individual applications without having a decw$login or decw$session. (eg: use RSH to do a CREATE/TERMINAL and from then, can run various X applications including TPU etc). In such a context, would keymaps on VMS still be used, or would it be soley the keymaps on the Mac that would be checked ? Is it possible to tell the VMS apps to consider the mouse thumbwheel as arrow keys ? AKA: I don't want to change the Mac's X keymapping because it would interfere with existing Mac X applications. Or is the only way to achieve this to change the kaymappings on the Mac and affect all Mac (X) applications ? And if the keymappings need to be changed, what info do I need from XEV, and where to I put it ? ------------------------------ End of INFO-VAX 2008.179 ************************
